He Must Increase

John 3:30
“He must increase, but I must decrease.”
When John the Baptist spoke these words, he was not experiencing an identity crisis. He was expressing the security of a man who knew both his identity and his assignment. He understood that he had come to prepare the way for Jesus. Therefore, when people began leaving him to follow Christ, he did not become threatened or discouraged. What others saw as a decline, John recognised as the fulfilment of God’s purpose.
His disciples were concerned because the crowds were changing direction. They measured success by the number of people who remained with John. John measured success by whether people were moving closer to Jesus. His joy was not found in keeping followers for himself, but in faithfully pointing them to the One he had come to reveal.
A person whose identity depends on being needed will struggle to pray, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Such a prayer requires deep security in God. It is only the person who has learned to abide in Christ who can genuinely rejoice when Jesus becomes more visible while they become less prominent.
This does not mean our personality, gifts, or calling disappear. Rather, it means our pride, ambition, insecurity, self-reliance, and desire for recognition are continually surrendered to Christ. As He increases in our lives, His character becomes more evident in the way we think, speak, lead, and love.
This is not a prayer for leaders alone. It is the prayer of every disciple. Whether we are at home, at work, serving in ministry, worshipping, or simply living our everyday lives, the question remains the same. “Lord, where do I need to decrease today so that Christ may increase in me?”
This is not the loss of identity. It is the transformation of identity. As Christ increases in us, love increases. Humility increases. Faith increases. Obedience increases. The old self gradually gives way to the life of Christ. This is the beautiful fruit of abiding.
Formation Personal Prayer
Lord Jesus, let Your life become increasingly visible in mine. Teach me to rejoice whenever You are glorified, even if I am unnoticed. Remove every desire to build my own name. Let my thoughts, words, and actions reflect Your character. Teach me to decrease in pride, fear, and self-reliance so that Your love, truth, and humility may increase in me. May people leave knowing You more than they know me. Let them hear Your voice more clearly than mine. Let them depend on Your Spirit more than my presence. Let my influence end where Your Lordship begins. Form me into Your likeness every day as I abide in You. Amen.
